THE KING AND PRINCE OF DAYTONA

by
Sherri Breaton

The 57th
running of the “Great American Race”, the Daytona 500 took place
Sunday February 21st, 2015 and we watched as NASCAR began to say
goodbye to a retiring king while ushering in a new prince. That
“king” being none other than four time Series Cup champion and
three time Daytona 500 winner, Jeff Gordon. The “prince” being 24
year-old Joey Logano, who became the second youngest driver in
history behind only Trevor Bayne to win the coveted title. Bayne was
only 20 when he pulled off one of the biggest upsets in 2011.

planning on riding off into the sunset quietly. Gordon was the first
pole winner to eclipse 200 mph since 1987. His pole-winning speed was
201.293, but this was only achieved because he was being pushed by
teammate Jimmie Johnson rather than running a lap around the
speedway alone during qualifying.
